Throwback Monday: DIY Pallet Headboard

DIY headboard progress

Wading through some older entries (because having a toddler puts a bit of a damper on the upcycling time) and having fun reliving the olden days that I hope to soon revisit. Wanted to point out that our DIY pallet headboard has held up wonderfully! The only thing I’d do differently is sand the very top of it completely smooth before staining to make it easier to dust. And maybe I’d seal it, if I could find one that wasn’t too glossy. It’s a great time of year … Continue reading

Get fresh floors for CHEAP with vinyl plank

cat walking on vinyl plank

Before we sold our house (3 days after putting it up for sale!), we had a laundry list of things to do in order to appeal to a variety of potential buyers. Selling your house ain’t easy. Even if it sells fast. And I rarely say “ain’t”. After deciding to sell, it took about a month and a half to get all these things done with our busy schedules, a toddler and two big dogs. (And cats, but they don’t bother us until we want … Continue reading

DIY: Plastic bag holder

Plastic bag holder/dispenser

Hi! I’m here! It took 3 weeks, but we now have internet. It’s cellular and has upload and download limits from 2002 but, luckily, Bell Fibe internet is coming to our street. We’ll be kissing these cellular butts goodbye soon, with any luck, and for a ridiculous cancellation fee that — unfortunately — will be totally worth it. Yesterday morning after the husband and son headed off to the farmer’s market, I had some strange inspiration. Since moving in, plastic bags have had no place. (This is true in our environment, too, which is why … Continue reading

DIY: Muddy Mutt Mitts

DIY Muddy Mutt Mitts

This Share Saturday is inspired by a great tutorial for Mud Puppy Mittens — I found it last night and made my own muddy mutt mitts today and I am so glad I did! I’m always looking for ways to keep our house in order. With animal family members, this can be a task — though the cats are pretty OK until 3AM when they either meow at the walls or lick our heads. Otherwise, we have two large dogs. When it’s rainy, we have a big, gross dog paw towel by the back door. Ew. So upon discovering … Continue reading

DIY: Upcycle an old nightstand to bathroom storage for free!

nightstand to bathroom table upcycle

Remember 2 years ago (sure you do!) before I was a wife or mom when we found a bunch of old junk on the side of the road? I finally got frustrated enough at the ugliness of the nightstand we got in that haul to turn it into a pretty one to use as bathroom storage. You can do the same, or simply refresh an old nightstand for a bedroom — and all for the low, low price of $0!   What do you think? OK, … Continue reading

Wow! Old Dresser to DIY Vintage Bench Pinned 2000 times!

DIY vintage bench from old dresser

Awoke to see that our old beat-up dresser to pretty vintage bench post has reached 2000 pins on Pinterest! UPDATE: 3000+ a week and a half later! :O Thank you thank you thank you! That makes me very happy! And to think we found it for free on the side of the road. Best! Soon I want to make a simple upholstered bench out of an old coffee table we have for the foot of the bed or even for our small entryway. More on that after… And … Continue reading

DIY: Quick & easy decorative table tray

This year we did something different for Christmas. We stuck to a reasonable budget (and managed to stay under it!) and a few of the gifts were even homemade. I had a lot of fun making them. Here’s one more. Note: Ours was sturdy enough that it could actually be used as a serving tray. Be sure to carefully test yours beforehand if this is what you plan to do with it, as not all frames are created equal.     Materials: A deep-set frame … Continue reading

DIY rustic end table for less than $10!

After we brought the Christmas tree out a couple weeks ago, we needed to rearrange (and remove) some of the furniture. Wouldn’t have to, really, but Junior’s tendency to eat everything in sight means we still need to crate train him a while longer. We have two of these simple LACK tables from Ikea. When the tree came back, we had to put one of them away, and replace our loveseat with an armchair we put away when Junior’s crate came along. Needless to say, it … Continue reading

Christmas Pinterest DIY Inspiration

I’ve been pinning my little heart out lately. By the way, if you don’t follow me yet, my boards can be found here. Here are a couple of ideas I’ve got a hankering to try this Christmas season. I could see the above being a bit of a fail. Have you ever filled a balloon with water to have it come out exactly round? Maybe using some cheap dollar store bowls and cracking the coloured ice out to make half-globes to line the walkway with … Continue reading

Make Ahead Meals — A New Sunday Tradition?

Today I decided (after sewing up the holes in my socks for sewing machine practice — I know, I’m adorable) that although I love to cook, that probably won’t always be the case come the holidays (uh, and after the stork comes). Sundays are almost always a boring day of sloth, so why not start making ahead a few meals per week on this day? This is especially great for the last Sunday of the month when Miklos has his club meeting. Maybe I’ll make … Continue reading
