Happy Halloween!

Raph for Halloween

Following in my footsteps… I was Raph for Halloween as a kid. My dad and nana made me a paper maché turtle shell by pasting tonnes of newspaper to an oval laundry basket and painting it varying shades of brown. Proportionate to my tiny body, it was not. Memorable, creative and extremely heavy? Definitely. I do prefer the flexy foam shell this kid has, attached by Velcro. Thanks, Value Village! 😀 Happy Halloween to you and yours! Are you dressing up this year? Share the … Continue reading

Happy Hearts Day!

What a sunshiny day! We haven’t had too many of these so far this year. We spent some time in the yard this morning with the melting snow, and we headed over to check on any new developments that may have arisen on the kid’s “stage”. It’s a sort of gazebo built by the previous lady who lived here. It’s empty now because it’s winter but usually it has a space to sit and eat. It would actually make a nice place to play some … Continue reading

What I learned when I took a leap — and why you should too

hot pink planner with gold writing

Happy New Year, everyone! Fresh year, fresh start — or something. You can always remain exactly the same if you want, too. I won’t make this post about resolutions because chances are you’ve talked/read a lot about those lately. What I do want to touch upon — after a year that many considered to be awfully bleak — is inspiration. A new year is a good time, I think, to look at your life and focus on what gets your gears turning and your heart pumping (healthily). January … Continue reading

I’ve been so quiet

Sorry to have disappeared lately. Between running my shop and running our lives and taking care to make sure our dog eats (he has chronic pancreatitis) and whatever other things pop up and getting little sleep (life in your 30s, basically), it’s been near impossible to take a moment here and there to write! My plan is to make a big ol’ bloggy comeback in the New Year after my shop settles back down after the Christmas rush. Anyway, nothing much to report. Just wanted to say hi, reassure … Continue reading

Review: Why Fitbit Blaze outshines Charge HR

A few years ago this blog shifted focus from a purely personal blog to one with the tagline and theme of “Make things better”. Part of making things better is squeezing in some exercise each day — whether it’s a full on workout (rare), a 45 minute bike ride (more common) or the bare minimum (10,000 steps / 30 minutes of consecutive activity). Today I’m quick-reviewing the Fitbit Blaze. As an experienced user of Fitbit’s products, I feel I have a good handle on what … Continue reading

Throwback Monday: DIY Pallet Headboard

DIY headboard progress

Wading through some older entries (because having a toddler puts a bit of a damper on the upcycling time) and having fun reliving the olden days that I hope to soon revisit. Wanted to point out that our DIY pallet headboard has held up wonderfully! The only thing I’d do differently is sand the very top of it completely smooth before staining to make it easier to dust. And maybe I’d seal it, if I could find one that wasn’t too glossy. It’s a great time of year … Continue reading

Why we love the Dream On Me Pack N Play Mattress

Hi again! Sometimes I like something enough that I feel sharing a few tidbits about my experience with it will benefit people in similar situations. This is one of those times. Here’s my review on this pack n play mattress that seemingly has magical powers over our nap-resisting son. [This post contains affiliate links.]    When John started sleeping over at his grandparents’ place, they got a Graco Pack N Play. We had one already that we’d loved since he was first born but weren’t ready to part … Continue reading

Turning 2!

Birthday cake time!

Happy birthday, Coolguy! This kid is our light. He’s made everything better and given us 1) a whole new perspective on life; 2) the realization that sleep deprivation is a powerful torture mechanism; and 3) filled our (previously grey & withered) hearts with love. Anyway I’ll hush up now. I just like this guy a bunch and can’t believe it’s been two years since my bladder worked properly. Love you, kid! 3 (+2) chalazion treatments that really helped

[UPDATED May 19, 2016: Have you been here before? I’ve added new stuff to this post. Scroll to the bottom for my favourite chalazion-busters yet.] The title of this post is misleading. We tried many ways. When our little guy got his first chalazions (one under each eye, ugh) around the age of one and a half, we naturally thought they were styes. I get them every so often from eye makeup, and figured that if they’re contagious, he may have gotten one from me … Continue reading

How to stop swelling with chayote

A day or so before Johnny made his way into the world, I had gone to the Cottage Life show in Toronto. (Lots of interesting things there — if you like cottage stuff, you should go!) Maybe it wasn’t the greatest idea to walk around so much more than I was used to doing at 39 weeks pregnant. That night, my feet swelled pretty badly. I figured a sleep would help, unfortunately sleep did not really come — and then my labour involved IV fluids … Continue reading
