Classical Music and Dogs: A Halfway Surprising Experiment

Classical music time is coma time for the dogs. It would be for me too, except that puppy resting means I can get things done. I am also about 2% more peaceful for listening to it, inclined to spin like a ballerina as I tidy the neighbour’s wayward bags of dog poo from our lawn, if I’m not keeping an eye on myself. Don’t credit me for this magical discovery, however. The suggestion to subject them (and myself) to classical was made to me by … Continue reading

Cat or Magpie? — Our Mixi, the Cat Burglar

Miklos was out for a bike ride in the woods when he happened upon two men playing with a little tortoiseshell kitten. They jokingly asked him, “You want a cat?” They didn’t know who they were dealing with obviously, because Miklos, being the kind-hearted guy he always has been, didn’t think it would be fair to leave a kitten in the woods just before a big thunderstorm. Sure enough, that cat came into our lives and was named Mixi. Soon, I would find kitty jingle … Continue reading

Pumpkin for Dog Tummy Rumbling

We’ve been walking Junior and Casey together for a week or so now that he got his second shots. Junior’s loud tummy growling problem began just after we saw the vet so when we walked the dogs to the pet food store, we mentioned it to the girl working. She mentioned feeding him a bit of pumpkin with his dinner as it’s supposed to settle an upset puppy stomach. I had read that a few times as well, so we decided to try it. The stuff … Continue reading

Lemons to Lemonade: From Flood to Ice Bucket

This past week with all the back-and-forth freeze-and-thaw (so many hyphens) a window well flooded in the back yard. The water then found its way into a crack in our foundation and into the laundry room, which I found Tuesday at midnight. There was a lot of water-bailing that happened that night (and a thank you goes out to Miklos’s dad for stopping by to help us out). A couple of buckets were left full of water and froze over.  Today I turned one over … Continue reading

Dog Tummy Rumbling

This morning is a tired one. Junior was trying to climb up the side of the bed, which was strange and somewhat irritating, until Miklos discovered what might have been the problem. The puppy’s tummy was growling like mad, loud enough we could hear it from across a room. We think it scared him a little. I suffer the same affliction sometimes when I’m not even hungry, though it’s easier for me to climb into our tall bed. Ignoring the scarier answers found on Google (I know), … Continue reading

I Am an Animal-Lover Who Eats Meat & Feels Bad

This post by an old friend resonated with me today. As an animal lover (we have three cats and two dogs — and that’s it!), I’ve often felt like a hypocrite for cooking beef, chicken or pork. I’ve never met a cow I didn’t like, and yet I’m all right with marinating a few small parts of one who died for the sake of my appetite. Everything tastes better with meat. I hate to say it, but although I enjoy veggie/legume meals a few times … Continue reading

Boxer Puppy Gradually Falls Asleep

Our boxer puppy, that is. Junior is just over nine weeks.  It’s a bratty age — going outside is becoming more fun and less a hiccup-inducing chore for him.  Only problem is the weather has been freezing/melting/freezing/melting so the ground is muddy and there is still ice to slip on.  Also, there are dried up bean pods everywhere in our yard thanks to the tree next door.  He loves batting at them with his paws and biting them.  Come on, boy!  It’s cold out, just … Continue reading

Look Who I Found in the Cat Bed…

While I was cleaning today, somebody snuck into the DIY cat bed I wrote about a while ago. We kind of love this guy. Now if only he’d stop crying and growling all night when we crate him. He slept uncrated last night on a pillow beside Casey. I’m OK with it, he didn’t run around or anything all night, and he was quiet. I don’t want him to affiliate the crate only with us leaving him, however, because I’m pretty sure he’ll always hate … Continue reading
